How to Find Your First Tech Mentor

January 26, 2026

A mentor is not a shortcut. A mentor is a multiplier for focused effort.

Before reaching out, prepare:

  • Define your goal for the next 6 months
  • List what you've already tried
  • Identify 2 or 3 specific questions

When you send a message, keep it short and actionable.

For example:

  • Introduce your background in one sentence
  • Share your current goal
  • Ask for one concrete form of guidance

After each session, follow up with a summary of what you learned and what you will do next. That is how trust is built over time.
